Board Certification is a "stamp of approval" that a surgeon's plastic surgery knowledge and performance are up to standards established by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Board Certification is only given to surgeons who have significant experience, training, and who have passed a rigorous examination process.
To become a Board Certified plastic surgeon, a physician must first graduate from medical school. The physician must then complete a surgical residency at a qualified medical center. The first several years of this residency include training in all aspects of surgery, and the final years focus exclusively on plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.
After completing his or her residency, the surgeon is considered "Board Eligible" and can apply to the American Board of Medical Specialties to take the exam administered by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The exam consists of exhaustive written and oral examinations that cover all aspects of reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, and require the surgeon to present case history examples of his or her own work to show competence.
